Maps and Guides

Useful resources for exploring MDI and Acadia. Most of the maps are available from Chamber businesses and the Chamber office.
Quietside Trail Map
The Chamber prints an up-to-date map of hiking and cycling trails on the Quietside. The map also includes tide tables for Southwest Harbor, the time of sunrise and sunset, and the current phase of the moon. Click here to download a PDF of the map.
Carriage Road Map
The Chamber also publishes the definitive Carriage Road Map, including profiles of each route and descriptions of each intersection. The map is available from the Chamber office and from many Chamber businesses.
Southwest Harbor Port Directory and Business Guide
The Port Directory covers the towns of both Tremont and Southwest Harbor (including the villages of Manset, Bass Harbor and Bernard). The Directory is available free at most tourist information booths on Mt Desert Island as well as the Chamber office.
MDI Business Locator Map
Widely used and distributed around the island, the Business Locator puts a good road map of MDI in a compact form. It shows the location of most island businesses. Click here to view the map online or to download a PDF.
Official Park Service Map
This map published by the National Park Service gives a good overview of the park, carriage roads and trails. It is fine for driving, but for hiking or cycling it is better to use a more detailed map like the Quietside Trail Map, the Carriage Road Map, or a specialized guidebook.
Chimani makes a comprehensive destination guide for Acadia that you can use on your mobile device. The guide is free and works without a wifi or cell-phone connection. Available on Google Play, Apple and Amazon.
Birding Guide to Acadia
Bob Duchesne, an enthusiastic birder and creator of the Maine Birding Trail, has produced an informative guide for birding on MDI. Included in the guide are maps of where to go and descriptions of what you're likely to see. Click here to get a copy of the Birding Guide. For a guide to birding in all of Maine, pickup a copy of Bob's book Maine Birding Trail.
Field Guide to the Birds of Mount Desert Island and Hancock County
Michael J. Good, President of Down East Nature Tours and founder of the annual Acadia Birding Festival, has written a detailed guide of birding spots on Mt Desert Island and surrounding areas. The guide suggests routes to follow and lists birds you're likely to see, depending on the season. Click here to get a copy of the guide.
Acadia Bird Checklist
Keep track of the birds you see in the park with this checklist.

Stargazing on MDI
As there are no major cities on the downeast coast of Maine, MDI is a great place for observing the night sky. The Quietside of the island, away from the lights of Bar Harbor, turns out also to be the dark side. Two College of the Atlantic students, Nicholas Bacon and Apoorv Ghelot, working with the Astronomy Institute of Maine and the COA's GIS Lab, created a map showing the amount of ambient light at night. Click here to see the map (darker areas represent better locations for stargazing).
