Community Services

• Town Services. The towns of Southwest Harbor and Tremont have offices for conducting business with the town. There are firehouses in Southwest Harbor, Bass Harbor, and Seal Cove. There is a regional waste and recycling station in Southwest Harbor.

• Libraries and Other Community Organizations. Scattered among the Quietside's villages are public libraries, historical societies, and centers of lifelong learning.

• Nature and Environment. Organizations with a mission to help people enjoy and protect the natural environment.

• Medical Facilities. There is one hospital on MDI and one near the island in Ellsworth. There are health clinics and emergency rooms in Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor.

• Post Offices. There are post offices in Bass Harbor, Bernard, Southwest Harbor, and Seal Cove.

• Public Transportation. Surprisingly, MDI has (free) widespread bus service around the island, as well as public ferry service to the off-shore islands.

• Places of Worship. There are several churches on the island, but services vary by season. For more options, look to Ellsworth.
