THE QUIETSIDE WELCOMES YOU
The "Quietside"
You will find the villages of the Quietside nestled between the power of the mountains and the beauty of the ocean with the tranquiliry and restful satisfaction on Mt. Desert Island can offer.
Southwest Harbor is a town, the largest on the west side of Mt. Deser Island (MDI) within whose boundaries lie the areas of Seawall and Manset.
Tremont is also a town - although much smaller than Southwest Harbor - within whose boundaries lie the villages of Bernard, Bass Harbor, Seal Cove and West Tremont.
Southest Harbor
Located on the southwest side of Somes Sound, the only natural fjord on the east coast of the United States, Southwest Harbor epitomizes the historically romantic image of seafaring coastal towns that attracts visitors to Down East Maine. From many of the roads skirting its well-protected harbor, visitors may view its fishing and boating industries in full swing. Sleek, elegant sailboats and sturdy, practical fishing and lobster boats continually come and go in their pursuit of both pleasure and profit. Colorful boatyards and the barn-like structures housing Southwest Harbor's renowned boatbuilding industry are clustered at the water's edge. Tree-lined residential streets, with their charming colonial homes, extend back from the harbor, giving way to the town's bustling business district. Southwest Harbor's Down East flavor doesn't stop at the waterfront - it permeates the town's business district as well. A delightful variety of small shops line the main thoroughfares, where one will find an array of items indigenous to Maine as well as fine clothing, Nautical wear and gear, gifts and arts and crafts.
Southwest Harbor is ranked as one of the tope ten commercial fishing harbors in the State of Maine. There are more than ten boatyard and boatbuilding firms in Southwest Harbor, many of them known around the world for the quality of their ships.
One's first impressions of Southwest Harbor will be based on the spectacular beauty of the harbor filled with graceful boats under sail, of distant islands and of fir-topped hills rolling gently down to the sea. Only gradually does one become aware of the brightly painted buoys and sea-weathered lobster pots piled high on busy piers, of the nets hung to dry, of the continuous activity of lobster and fishing boats. Southwest Harbor's oldes island tradition, that of going down to the sea in ships, is lived today as it has been for generations.
Tremont
Daily life in the town of Tremont, like Southwest Harbor, is centered around fishing and marine industries. The villages located in the town of tremont boast sheltered harbors alive with the day-to-day business of working the sea. Each village has it own complement of small businesses ranging from small stores supplying the daily necessities to the specialty and antique shops.
Visitors will be delighted by the breathtaking vistas that provide the setting for the hard-working industries of this area.
